Hapag Lloyd is a German international shipping and container company. It was formed on September 1st, 1970, by the merger of Hapag-American Line (which dated from 1847) and Norddeutscher Lloyd (which dated from 1856).
Hapag Lloyd operates in 137 countries, with a vessel fleet of 257 ships, transporting 11.8 million TEU per year. Their fleet has a total capacity of 1.8 million TEU and provides fast and reliable connections between more than 600 ports on all continents.
In 2014, Hapag Lloyd took over the container business of Chile’s Compañía Sud Americana de Vapores SA (CSAV). In 2016, Hapag Lloyd merged with United Arab Shipping Company (UASC), which resulted in Hapag Lloyd becoming the world’s 5th largest container transported in terms of vessel capacity.
